Fluffy1

It’s Friday!!! 😀

I wore this fluffy lilac jumper for birthday drinks with my friends last week. It’s very warm (almost too warm) and I was a very popular hug candidate in it, which is always nice! As it’s a bit more cosy and shapeless than what I usually wear, I paired it with as much bling as possible to glam it up.

Bracelets and rings are all old.

My friend bought me the starry dangly earrings about 12 years ago and I still love them and wear them all the time. And the hearty Vivienne Westwood earrings were my birthday present this year from my bf.

The necklace (aka my new favourite thing) is from Claire’s Accessories and was a gift from my nieces, as I mentioned last post!

Facebook has started doing these little slideshows of the photos on my phone at the top of my feed, which really annoys me (I’m constantly terrified I’ll accidentally upload the most recent batch of “do I have back rollies in this?” mirror selfies that I’ve just taken at any given time) but I thought the fading effect of these pictures was cool!

My nails are painted in gel varnish from Avon, and it’s really good! It goes on very smoothly and lasts a long time before chipping. 🙂

My friends totally spoiled me! I had a homemade cake, a store bought cake and an inflatable crown! (As well as presents!) It was a great night. 😀

(Although I have made it clear that I do not want the same style of cake next year- I’m keeping that number on the DL!)

IMG_6053

This was the cake after the meringue numbers collapsed and it was given to me backwards, so instead of ’29’, I am now officially ‘P smooerrsh’.

BDAY6It’s that time of year again- the time when the lure of presents and my horror of becoming a grown up wage war against each other, leaving me a conflicted and confused bystander.

So far however, the presents are winning! 😀

BDAYYes, it’s my birthday today and my adorable nieces, who share my affinity for all things colourful and sparkly, gave me this box of jewels hand picked by themselves from Claire’s Accessories. (Not entirely by themselves, I hope. Being 5 and 3 years old, I’ll assume my sister was there with them. And that she paid.)

Anyway, how spoilt am I?! 😀 I decided to wear the most blingalicious one today, in honour of my agedness.

BDAY8

BDAY2

I also wore my tiara  (so sue me, I wear tiaras on my birthday! And on Oscar night. And my nameday. And whenever I wear a robe because that makes me feel crazy glamourous. And sometimes just when I’m feeling blue.) for breakfast but took it off before leaving for work. 😩 Now that I’m old, I have to conform to society’s interpretation of what makes a person seem “normal” and “sane”.

Harrumph.

BDAY NAILS

I painted my nails for NYE, in CiatĂ©’s Raspberry Collins with a layer of Rom-Com Rouge red glitter over the top. It’s not the most mature, but I like it!

I’m at work today (grr) but going out for dinner tonight (yay). I’ll probably change into what I wore last Valentine’s Day for that, as it’s funky and I can wear my most stretchy trousers with it. Steak and cheesecake here I come!

Happy New Year everyone! Here’s hoping 2016 is the best yet!

Ella Eyre1

I understand there is something on the twitternet called Woman Crush Wednesday, where one discusses a woman that one admires? (I should really join Twitter and/or Instagram, I am too young to be this curmudgeonly about technology.) Anyway, as it is Wednesday, I thought I should share what I was doing last Wednesday, which was being very pleasantly surprised watching Ella Eyre perform at The Roundhouse in Camden.

I was not an especially massive fan (I only knew her from her guest vocals on Rudimental’s “Waiting All Night”), but my friend invited me, I love gigs, and the Roundhouse is a cool venue. So, after bracing ourselves for the inevitable hair envy, off we went.

And were completely blown away! She was brilliant- great voice, I loved the songs, I was obsessed with her outfit and she seemed to be genuinely enjoying herself. I couldn’t get any decent pictures of her outfit so had to steal some off t’internet – I am never going anywhere without a black PVC capelet with gold tassels again! I also loved that she wore funky trainers instead of stilettos so that she could bounce around comfortably.

I’m also mega-crushing on her look in the video for “Gravity”, with DJ Fresh. I love turquoise and silver for summer!:

Her support acts were really good too – Jake Isaac, who had a lovely voice, followed by Shift K3y, whose songs all sounded like covers of 90s songs that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I don’t mean that as a criticism, as a 90s lover, I really enjoyed them! (I will however criticise his incredibly daft name!)

I wore:

photo 3EE

– My “Will Work For Candy” t-shirt, that I bought in the Sugar Factory in Vegas (it’s open all night, so cool! And also dangerous….)

– My trusty M&S treggings (one day I will do an OOTD not wearing them, honest!)

– Old choker necklace from the actual 90s (or possibly very early noughties)

– Chilli pepper necklace that was a freebie from a shop in Siena

– Random old black chain I had at home

– My new Marc by Marc Jacobs zip earrings, that were a Christmas present

– Old blue and gold bangles, from Accessorize

I also painted my nails pink with a layer of Barry M Croc Effect nail varnish (reviewed here):

But my absolute favourite thing about the gig? Gig earrings! I always try and buy some sort of merchandise at gigs as a souvenir, but usually you’re limited to ill-fitting men’s t-shirts, hugely tight women’s t-shirts, or plastic wristbands. There were actually loads of cool things on offer. Her trademark symbol is a crown-wearing lion, and they had canvas bags, onesies, phone cases, hoodies etc. with it on. But when I saw that they had earrings, I was sold!

Vday OOTD

I love a good theme, and planning my outfit around the day is one of my life’s greatest joys. On Valentine’s Day however, I think I had actually managed to overdose on hearts and red and pink, and so I kept my outfit simple and unthemed… classic, if you will, to match my classic evening itself- dinner and a movie.

(Ok I did wear my hearty sunnies all morning, but we’re talking about the evening here!)

The mullet top is from Primark and is one of my favourite things! It’s loose and comfy and I love the bejewelled pattern and the unexpected back.

mllts

Incidentally, my favourite shopping buddy and I both bought this top while we were out together, and her boyfriend hates it. He hates it so much that he actually hid it from her. Hid it from her. Fortunately she finds this amusing but just the thought of it makes me come over all hulksmash. I would go insane if anyone did this to me. (Thankfully, my friends and family know better than to attempt such a thing.) I actually try and wear this top in front of her boyfriend as much as possible just to hurt his eyes. :-p

So maybe this style is more of a girl trend than a boy trend but, as the saying goes “WHO THE HELL CARES?!” (Ok, maybe that’s not an actual saying.) If you like something and feel good in it and it makes you happy, wear it and enjoy it! (With the possible exception of t-shirts with, like, swastikas on them or something… There are exceptions to every rule.) Never mind if your boyfriend hates it or your Mum thinks it’s unflattering, you’re not making them wear it. Fashion is meant to be fun, so ignore anyone who tries to take that from you!

I’m not sure how I went from Valentine’s Day to talking about swastikas.

Moving on… 🙂

The trousers, shoes and Love bracelet are from M&S and the earrings are from Karen Millen.

I did paint my nails red too, which is pretty Valentine’s-y, and I thought it really tied the look together and made the colours pop 🙂

*sigh* I’m already mourning the loss of my amazing hair day, courtesy of having had my hair cut that morning (at ‘Enry ‘Iggins in Camden, who I really like, because they actually listen to what you want. And then do that, instead of something else entirely. And they play good music.)

Happy Thursday everyone!

Pinky and Perky

A couple of weeks ago, inspired by the onset of spring (ha!) and by this feature in Grazia-

Grazia nails

– I painted my nails bubblegum pink, making use of yet another of my CiatĂ© nail varnishes from my Christmas Mini Mani Manor.  I liked it but it felt a little too cutesy/young for me and I didn’t keep it that long.

With my pink Rosie Huntington-Whitely for M&S silky pyjamas…

photo 2 (66)

photo 3 (38)

I ended up wearing a lot of black to counterbalance the pinkness. Above: with my black top from Ruly’s that I bought in Lisbon with a view to wearing to work(!). It’s actually completely see-through at the front and I thought that with a strap top underneath it would be decent. Apparently not… It turned out a bit more boobastic than I anticipated, especially in photos!

Ciaté nail varnish in Strawberry Milkshake and Kelly Brook for New Look nail varnish (no name).

Weirdly, I didn’t have the same overly-cute issue with this pink sparkly glitter nail varnish… I really liked it!

photo 3 (64)

photo 1 (71)

I should really have painted my nails nude or pale pink beforehand as it annoyed me that I could see the white part of my nails. Also, it did take several coats to look good and it peeled off quite easily. Then again, I didn’t bother with a top coat either (I’m very lazy) so that might have helped!

Stroking the sheep. I’m obsessed with the sheep.

The pink glitter also matched my mood perfectly as I read this little book of Dolly Parton wisdom…

photo 2 (67)

I bought mine in Joy, but you can buy it on Amazon too. I’ve been pretty obsessed with Ms. Parton ever since seeing her live last year, so I had to have this cute little book. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before and it’s only small but still, it contains such pearls of genius and humour as:

Nails close

In my insanely cool CiatĂ© nail varnish advent calendar, I received a little pot of faux half pearls. I thought they were adorable but couldn’t figure out what to do with them until a friend suggested that they’d make a really cute pom pom for Santa’s hat. I was sold and this is my attempt!

Nails 2

(Santa accordion decorations are from Marks & Spencer.)

Nail varnishes

First, I painted my nails a nude colour. OPI (annoyingly) don’t label their actual bottles so I don’t know the exact colour!

Then, I went over them with a layer of Collection Bedazzled Nail Effects in Razzle Dazzle.

Once that was dry, I went over it (only on my accent nail- I’m lazy) with a clear top coat so that I would have a smoother surface.

Then I did a quick sweep to create a Santa hat shape in red. It’s not the exact shape I wanted but I always find that when attempting nail art, it’s better to do it quickly and not spend too long correcting it. If you do it painstakingly slowly and then faf about with it, it just ends up looking messy and clumpy. This could just be me though!

I then dotted my Barry M white nail art pen along the bottom (I could have used pearls for that too but couldn’t be bothered) to create the fur at the base of his hat.

And finally, I added a dot of the clear nail varnish at the top of the hat and, using tweezers, placed my little pearl pom pom (pearl pom? pom pearl? I can’t decide!) on top.

Nails white tree

There are some lights where the pearl doesn’t show up as much so it’s probably the sort of manicure that one has to stop and properly look at to appreciate (especially since it’s quite messy as I did it whilst watching Dirty Dancing, therefore there may have been impromptu bopping and cheering) but still, I think it’s pretty cute.

Nails today

Today, at work. Wearing a Primark top, bow earrings from a market in Birmingham, and ring from Peacocks.

And just a quick reminder of my favourite quote from my advent calendar, because why not:

Advents

…my sister gave to meee…The coolest, most awesome advent calendar the world has ever seeeen. Ever.

(I see a Christmas No.1 in my future.)

Advent tree

Out of the blue, my fabulous sister presented me with this insanely cool advent calendar from Ciaté, with windows that you open to reveal a different nail varnish every day!

Advent

It’s a Mini Mani Manor! And kinda looks like I want my house to look someday. (Complete with giant pink tree and person sized nail varnishes.)

(The tree is from Paperchase.)

Days 1 to 5…

Spoiler alert: I tried not to look too closely at the back when I took this next picture, as I like to be surprised. If you have this advent calendar: look away now!

Advent back

It even has little quotes behind all the windows 🙂

EvilEyeMani

I decided to try this evil eye mani after seeing it in a Maison Bentley Style post. I loved it but it took about 2 and a half hours. The white varnish alone required about 4 coats. Also, my niece thought the eyes were snails! Stayed pretty well though.

Summer 2014 2072

This dress is about 20 years old I think, I stole it off my sister in law. The label says it’s lingerie though, so maybe I wasn’t supposed to wear it out! This dress is also my main excuse for never throwing anything away, as I kept it in my cupboard for years, trying it on occasionally, and it never suited me. One day I put it on, and loved it. I now wear it all the time in summer, or in winter with leggings and boots. Hoarding for President!

Summer 2014 2251

The Athinaion cinema, the last remaining cinema in Athens to display hand painted movie posters, still painted by the same man who has done them for over 60 years. He’s in his eighties now and this prompted a really fascinating conversation with the taxi driver, who was driving us when I took this photo, about dying arts. The driver had trained as a goldsmith, an art that had been passed down to him through several generations. He told us how sad it made him that he had no one to pass it on to, and that while everything can be done with computers and machines now, it didn’t change the fact that a craft had died. Would a machine know the exact length an earring stem needs to be to hold a specific weight earring whilst not hurting the woman, he asked? It was a really interesting conversation, and reminded me that people are never just what they seem.

Swimsuit: Marks & Spencer. I looove this swimsuit, I love the pattern, plus it has a built-in underwire- score!; Shorts: Warehouse; Bag: Accessorize;

Hallowe'en nails 3

I have no original thought when it comes to manicures so I copied this idea from t’internet. I’m not into anything super-scary so I thought this was Hallowe’en appropriate, but also cute.

(And easy!)

Hallowe'en nails

I used Revlon No. 999 in Blackest Black, and Barry M nail art pens in black and white. I roped my boyfriend in to do the eyes. We were going to do a pair of eyes on each hand but the pressure was too much for him so we stopped after one…! :-p

Hallowe'en nails 2

Happy Hallowe’en and have a great weekend!
