Pinky and Perky

A couple of weeks ago, inspired by the onset of spring (ha!) and by this feature in Grazia-

Grazia nails

– I painted my nails bubblegum pink, making use of yet another of my Ciaté nail varnishes from my Christmas Mini Mani Manor.  I liked it but it felt a little too cutesy/young for me and I didn’t keep it that long.

I ended up wearing a lot of black to counterbalance the pinkness. Above: with my black top from Ruly’s that I bought in Lisbon with a view to wearing to work(!). It’s actually completely see-through at the front and I thought that with a strap top underneath it would be decent. Apparently not… It turned out a bit more boobastic than I anticipated, especially in photos!

Weirdly, I didn’t have the same overly-cute issue with this pink sparkly glitter nail varnish… I really liked it!

I should really have painted my nails nude or pale pink beforehand as it annoyed me that I could see the white part of my nails. Also, it did take several coats to look good and it peeled off quite easily. Then again, I didn’t bother with a top coat either (I’m very lazy) so that might have helped!

The pink glitter also matched my mood perfectly as I read this little book of Dolly Parton wisdom…

I bought mine in Joy, but you can buy it on Amazon too. I’ve been pretty obsessed with Ms. Parton ever since seeing her live last year, so I had to have this cute little book. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before and it’s only small but still, it contains such pearls of genius and humour as:

Nails close

In my insanely cool Ciaté nail varnish advent calendar, I received a little pot of faux half pearls. I thought they were adorable but couldn’t figure out what to do with them until a friend suggested that they’d make a really cute pom pom for Santa’s hat. I was sold and this is my attempt!

(Santa accordion decorations are from Marks & Spencer.)

Nail varnishes

First, I painted my nails a nude colour. OPI (annoyingly) don’t label their actual bottles so I don’t know the exact colour!

Then, I went over them with a layer of Collection Bedazzled Nail Effects in Razzle Dazzle.

Once that was dry, I went over it (only on my accent nail- I’m lazy) with a clear top coat so that I would have a smoother surface.

Then I did a quick sweep to create a Santa hat shape in red. It’s not the exact shape I wanted but I always find that when attempting nail art, it’s better to do it quickly and not spend too long correcting it. If you do it painstakingly slowly and then faf about with it, it just ends up looking messy and clumpy. This could just be me though!

I then dotted my Barry M white nail art pen along the bottom (I could have used pearls for that too but couldn’t be bothered) to create the fur at the base of his hat.

And finally, I added a dot of the clear nail varnish at the top of the hat and, using tweezers, placed my little pearl pom pom (pearl pom? pom pearl? I can’t decide!) on top.

There are some lights where the pearl doesn’t show up as much so it’s probably the sort of manicure that one has to stop and properly look at to appreciate (especially since it’s quite messy as I did it whilst watching Dirty Dancing, therefore there may have been impromptu bopping and cheering) but still, I think it’s pretty cute.

(I see a Christmas No.1 in my future.)

Advent tree

Out of the blue, my fabulous sister presented me with this insanely cool advent calendar from Ciaté, with windows that you open to reveal a different nail varnish every day!

Advent

It’s a Mini Mani Manor! And kinda looks like I want my house to look someday. (Complete with giant pink tree and person sized nail varnishes.)

EvilEyeMani

I decided to try this evil eye mani after seeing it in a Maison Bentley Style post. I loved it but it took about 2 and a half hours. The white varnish alone required about 4 coats. Also, my niece thought the eyes were snails! Stayed pretty well though.

This dress is about 20 years old I think, I stole it off my sister in law. The label says it’s lingerie though, so maybe I wasn’t supposed to wear it out! This dress is also my main excuse for never throwing anything away, as I kept it in my cupboard for years, trying it on occasionally, and it never suited me. One day I put it on, and loved it. I now wear it all the time in summer, or in winter with leggings and boots. Hoarding for President!

The Athinaion cinema, the last remaining cinema in Athens to display hand painted movie posters, still painted by the same man who has done them for over 60 years. He’s in his eighties now and this prompted a really fascinating conversation with the taxi driver, who was driving us when I took this photo, about dying arts. The driver had trained as a goldsmith, an art that had been passed down to him through several generations. He told us how sad it made him that he had no one to pass it on to, and that while everything can be done with computers and machines now, it didn’t change the fact that a craft had died. Would a machine know the exact length an earring stem needs to be to hold a specific weight earring whilst not hurting the woman, he asked? It was a really interesting conversation, and reminded me that people are never just what they seem.

Swimsuit: Marks & Spencer. I looove this swimsuit, I love the pattern, plus it has a built-in underwire- score!; Shorts: Warehouse; Bag: Accessorize;

Hallowe'en nails 3

I have no original thought when it comes to manicures so I copied this idea from t’internet. I’m not into anything super-scary so I thought this was Hallowe’en appropriate, but also cute.

(And easy!)

Hallowe'en nails

I used Revlon No. 999 in Blackest Black, and Barry M nail art pens in black and white. I roped my boyfriend in to do the eyes. We were going to do a pair of eyes on each hand but the pressure was too much for him so we stopped after one…! :-p

Happy Hallowe’en and have a great weekend!

Oops I did it again… I never seem to realise that I’m wearing all one brand until I start writing a post!

Oh well, here is my OOTD:

White top: M&S

Navy treggings: also M&S

(Strap top underneath: M&S..)

White plimsolls: Office

Necklace: Anthropologie (described by one of my best friends as “the ugliest necklace she had ever seen in her entire life”. :-p  See my post “Divisive” for how much I mind…)

Lilac nails: Revlon “Charming”, I love this colour. My girlfriends said it made me look (even) pastier than normal but I have also had compliments on it from cute guys so… (Ok ok, one cute guy… and he was trying to sell me something…. but still, he clearly meant it.) I think it’s really pretty, plus it lasts quite a while before chipping, so I’m sold.

For work, I changed into flats from Office. (I know it’s ridiculous to go to work in flats only to change into different flats but I just can’t walk for long in ballet shoes!)

The earrings are from Dorothy Perkins, a few years ago.

I have been obsessed with the craze for pastel hair for a while now and, having read a couple of how-tos, I decided to buy some Bumble and Bumble Spray Chalk, which seemed to be mentioned a lot in said tutorials. I settled for Blush, with a view to getting the Lavender if I liked it. This is what I thought:

– Holy Overpricing! It cost £15 in Boots for this piddly 40g can.

– It stung my scalp where I got some on accidentally.

– You have to spray tons on to make any impact (this could be because I have dark hair though. Blondes might find it easier).

– It made my hair look and feel brittle and tangly.

– I have to say, this did not seem any different to any other crappy, cheapo colour spray that you might buy for Hallowe’en. Maybe powder chalk is better, but as they had advertised this as being this great new addition to the hair chalk world, I assumed that the spray would be easier to use.

– My boyfriend said “Argh, why is your hair grey??!!” when he saw me.

– It actually came out slightly better in the pictures than it looked in real life! Typical, lol. Either way, I was disappointed and do not recommend. 😦

Next up is this Croc Effect nail varnish that my friend Lucia got me for my birthday. Thoughts:

– Clear instructions on it, thankfully. It tells you to paint your nails whatever colour you fancy (although presumbaly dark colours won’t show very well) and wait a couple of minutes for it to be almost but not fully dry. Then you paint over your nails with this stuff. At first it just comes out black, and completely obscures your original colour but gradually the cracks start to take effect.

-This is the only time my bf has ever taken an interest in me painting my nails. Seriously, he was fascinated. Man Utd were on and he literally watched paint dry instead!!

– I liked it a lot.  It’s not immediately noticeable from a distance, but up close, it’s a cool effect! A couple of people said it looked like veins, which could also work. Next time I might try a different, brighter colour, and I’ll also spread the Barry M a little thinner in case that makes bigger, more noticeable cracks.

– I looked up the price (felt very rude doing that to a present!) and apparently it’s £3.99 and also comes in burgundy (which I may have to get). This seems like a completely reasonable price to me. Our survey says: recommended. 🙂

I’m really feeling this season’s trend for ice-blue pastels at the moment, so I thought I’d dip my toes (or rather, fingers, fnar fnar) in the water with the cheap option- baby blue nail varnish that I got for £2 in Peacocks. I liked it a lot actually, it hit the right balance between being spring-y but still giving a nod to winter (especially with the bling) which feels appropriate for the (confused and confusing!) weather!

Advice to anyone coming to London anytime soon – it’s all about layers!

And sunnies 😀

??????????????????????

Don’t you just love it when you are accidentally fashionable?

When I first saw all the glorious pics from Moschino’s new collection with Jeremy Scott, I couldn’t help but feel a little smug. I’ve been taking inspiration from fast food for years! Here I am at my sister and brother-in-law’s joint birthday party, back in 2009, where the theme was “come as your favourite food”. (A theme I totally recommend, people got really creative and it was hilarious.) Anyway, for me there was only one option- I had to represent all my favourite junk foods!

So I went to McDonald’s and requested a bunch of empty french fry cartons. (They questioned me throroughly before complying, I think they thought I was going to stage some kind of anti-establishment, down with McDonald’s art installation in Trafalgar Square or something. When I explained what it was for, they clearly thought that no one would make up something so ridiculous so it must be true.) I then stapled them together in a triangular/corset formation, along with some elastic for the back.

The next Two for Tuesday I asked for some empty Domino’s pizza boxes along with my dinner. Being one of their most loyal customers (I actually won a free garlic pizza bread for this once. Only thing I’ve ever won. I really shouldn’t be so proud of that…), they easily agreed and I strung them onto some twine that  I made into a skirt. I drank a few too many Diet Cokes, washed the cans and tied them on too (I’m all about embellishment).Throw in some Walker’s crisp packets to preserve my modesty and boom – a skirt.

Then it was accessory time. I simply slid a chip packet onto a headband (and you can’t tell in the pictures, but I also stuck some diamantes from Claire’s Accessories onto the top) and voila – tiara. I stuck the “Warning: Hot Pizza” flaps from my pizza boxes onto my shoes with sellotape and I bought some popping corn, popped it and strung it to make some necklaces and a bracelet (it’s the butter and salt etc. that makes it greasy, without that it was fine.) I also happened to have burger earrings and a ring (don’t ask) so I was ready! I even did a red and yellow striped mani, but as this was in the pre-blog/pre-iphone years for me, I don’t have any decent pics 😦 (Imagine! The horror!)

burgerearrings

My burger earrings. The chip earrings were a more recent gift from my bf, otherwise I would definitely have included them too!

The best pictures I could gather of my McManicure…

ImageNaturally, I want the whole collection….

???????????????????????????????

So, I’m not saying that Jeremy Scott and Moschino were necessarily inspired by my fancy dress costume from 5 years ago…..but can you prove that they weren’t?!?!

:-p
