Felt pretty smug reading this week’s Grazia and seeing this feature on hearty sunglasses, including the Asos pair I bought 4 months ago.

So ahead of the game… :-p

I’ve been wanting a pair ever since seeing Samantha in this awesome outfit in SATC:

Bright old things2

I have really enjoyed the Selfridges “Bright Old Things” campaign, which was a twist on their annual “Bright Young Things” exhibit. The window displays  (which I think I saw them taking down the other evening when I went past on the bus) were mesmerising, the stuff was all awesome and I loved the reminder that something doesn’t need to be designed by a young “up and comer” to be innovative, exciting, fresh and cool!

Also, this is now my life motto:

I also liked the casual and proud use of the word “old”, showing us that it’s not an insult or something to be feared and avoided.

(A reminder I actually really needed as – at the grand old age of 28 – my friends and I spend an inordinate amount of time panicking about our encroaching agedness/any visible signs of ageing. I think some grip-getting may be necessary!)

😀

Hope everyone is having a good week so far!

Vday Overkill

Too much? What’s too much?

Some Valentine’s Day outfit ideas…

Left: River Island Lips tee, M&S heart skirt, Peacocks Love necklace

Right: M&S heart shirt & M&S lips skirt, with River Island Love necklace & M&S Love bracelet.

I wear too much M&S.

photo 3 (70)

I have been incorporating these pieces into my wardrobe this week in honour of good ol’ St Valentine, but not all at once! Maybe on the day itself?

:-p

Note to self: leaning forward to try and get a full outfit shot from the top results in the creation of terrifying tooth-boob-headed monster thing. Romantic effect may be ruined.

Pinky and Perky

A couple of weeks ago, inspired by the onset of spring (ha!) and by this feature in Grazia-

Grazia nails

– I painted my nails bubblegum pink, making use of yet another of my Ciaté nail varnishes from my Christmas Mini Mani Manor.  I liked it but it felt a little too cutesy/young for me and I didn’t keep it that long.

photo 2 (65)

With my pink Rosie Huntington-Whitely for M&S silky pyjamas…

photo 2 (66)

photo 3 (38)

I ended up wearing a lot of black to counterbalance the pinkness. Above: with my black top from Ruly’s that I bought in Lisbon with a view to wearing to work(!). It’s actually completely see-through at the front and I thought that with a strap top underneath it would be decent. Apparently not… It turned out a bit more boobastic than I anticipated, especially in photos!

Ciaté nail varnish in Strawberry Milkshake and Kelly Brook for New Look nail varnish (no name).

Weirdly, I didn’t have the same overly-cute issue with this pink sparkly glitter nail varnish… I really liked it!

photo 3 (64)

photo 1 (71)

I should really have painted my nails nude or pale pink beforehand as it annoyed me that I could see the white part of my nails. Also, it did take several coats to look good and it peeled off quite easily. Then again, I didn’t bother with a top coat either (I’m very lazy) so that might have helped!

This picture represents my life yo.

Stroking the sheep. I’m obsessed with the sheep.

The pink glitter also matched my mood perfectly as I read this little book of Dolly Parton wisdom…

photo 2 (67)

I bought mine in Joy, but you can buy it on Amazon too. I’ve been pretty obsessed with Ms. Parton ever since seeing her live last year, so I had to have this cute little book. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before and it’s only small but still, it contains such pearls of genius and humour as:

I take pictures of so much stuff that I like/buy/am inspired by with the intention of blogging about it here, but invariably end up getting distracted/procrastinating/finding something else I want to blog about first. So I thought I’d just bite the bullet and share them already in one long, rambly post. Before earrings become obsolete and no one cares anymore. (Perish the thought!)…

I bought the sheep earrings from Joy as a Christmas present to myself, and am obsessed with how cute they are!

This jumper is from Rad.co – I ordered loads of things from there and definitely want to do a whole post for them!

photo 2 (54)

I went and saw Bryan Adams at The 02 in November. My sister was a massive fan of his growing up so I became one out of necessity! He was amazing, kept it all really simple- just him, his band and some black and white images on a screen behind him. We screamed like teenagers!

I wore: Asos Curve off the shoulder jumper, black M&S treggings, Asda watermelon handbag (that was a gift from my nieces :-D), Office booties and Topshop earrings. The necklace is just some chains that I bought at a craft shop in Monastiraki, held together with a safety pin.

I tried to fwoof my hair up and get an 80s rock chick vibe going… Unfortunately my hair always falls flat after about 10 minutes!

This little tag was on my birthday card from my brother… I think he was trying to tell me something!

And speaking of my birthday…

My friend got me these monstrosities-

PPs

Period panties. FFS. How is this a thing?! My favourite thing about these was that I opened them in front of my father, and his face as he tried to work them out was hilaaarious!

photo 2 (57)

Adorable Oliver Bonas bag, for when you’re feeling a bit Pharrell…

photo 4 (40)

I finally got around to watching the Asprey’s documentary (“Inside Asprey: Luxury by Royal Appointment”, which aired last summer) and thought these torso glasses were really cool. Sorry for the rubbish quality of the photo- it is just a picture of my TV on pause.

photo 2 (51)

Flamingo fever!

There’s a lot of Marks and Spencer in this outfit- the flamingo top and pearls were gifts from my sister for Christmas and my birthday. The Love bracelet was also a gift from M&S a couple of years ago.

The peacock earrings are not from M&S, they were a gift from a friend in Birmingham. I actually just put them on as I liked the green and pink together – the bird theme was inadvertent!

photo 4

Monsoon jumper- this actually has a detachable feather collar that I removed so as to limit the birdiness!

photo 1 (53)

I love that this top is long enough that the pattern still shows under the jumper. (Although, 2 elderly people in my vicinity commented on the fact that the “youth” never tuck their shirts in!)

You can get away with a boring black outfit with enough bling!

Necklace and big ring: Peacocks

Earrings: Mikey

Small wedding-y type ring and bracelets: gifts from various shops in Athens, I think.

photo 3 (52)

I have made the executive decision that I am not, as yet, too old for pig tails!

(This may be misguided but I don’t care. :-p)

photo 3 (50)

This made me chuckle, I don’t really know why, I just liked it! (Probably the same reason I like the current trend for those really rude and sweary cross-stich embroideries – I like the contrast of something cute, i.e. a teacup with something offensive!) From Sublime.

I love chandeliers, and this one in One Moorgate Place was a nice one.

I’ve been experiencing non-buyer’s remorse ever since seeing this M&S cushion and deciding against it a couple of months ago. I finally bought it! It just makes me smile 🙂

(I swear I’m not a sheep fetishist! :-/ I don’t think…)

Happy Friday everyone, and have a great weekend!

These were my OOTDs of last Saturday…

For lunch: Asos maxi dress, Asos backpack, Office plimsolls, rose earrings from Tiara in Athens

For a friend’s birthday night out: M&S treggings, Urban Outfitters strap top, River Island sequinned jacket, Primark shoes, very (veeery) old Claire’s Accessories maroon leopard print mini-backpack (so glad I never threw this out! I am loving it recently!), equally old fake tattoo necklace, also from Claire’s, also something I’m ridiculously pleased to be wearing again! The yellow earrings were a gift but I realised when I got home that I’d lost one! 😦

Disclaimer: my hair actually looked quite nice on Saturday, dammit! The club we went to (Drink Shop Do, amazing music, super fun night, no ventilation) was so hot that my hair just went haywire. All my friends and I were in the bathrooms trying to figure out how much clothing we could remove without getting arrested, everyone was just so hot and, ahem, “glowy”! Note to self: take pictures before leaving the house…

Image

On Sunday, I had decided to take inspiration from this outfit that I’d seen in Grazia, as I had similar items in my own wardrobe. Unfortunately I learned (what I already knew, grr!) that sleeping in until just before I have to leave the house is a terrible idea for me, as I didn’t like the outfit on me at all but had no time to change!

Image

Image

Top: Primark, Skirt: vintage (aka my Mum’s!), necklace: Peacocks, sunglasses: River Island

I think the top was definitely too long, and the overall effect was quite shapeless. And, as ever, I was surprised to discover that going out when I’m not happy with my outfit makes me a moody cow! Is that just me?? Are there other weird people out there? (Please say yes!)

ImageI went and saw Beyoncé at the O2 a couple of weeks ago. As ever, she was magnificent. Truly awe-inspiring. A glorious, gorgeous reminder that everything I do is actually a little bit crap. Lol :-p

I wore:

– Splotchy dress from ASOS

– Sequinned jacket – Topshop

-Black tights and booties – M&S

(Excuse the posey posing, I took these after the show, when I might have been a little tipsy…)

Image

– The What would Beyoncé do?! badge was a freebie at a comedy show of the same name last year. (V funny!)

– BCBGeneration make-your-own bracelet

-Teardrop ring – Mikey (I miss Mikey, does it still exist?!)

– Mahoosive earrings – I bought these when Crazy in Love came out (HOW was that 11 years ago?!), as she had a similar pair in the video. I don’t remember where I got them from, I just remember scouring the internet for them (this was long before I had a computer of my own and before internet shopping was a thing that I did) because I simply had to have them. I wore them every time I went anywhere for years! I still love them, actually. And they are not as monstrously heavy as one might imagine. (I mean, they’re not feathers but I have worse!)

Image

I never really realised how much of a fashion influence Beyoncé is/has been on me until I wrote this post, but this is what I wore at the weekend, inspired by her in the video for XO (seriously obsessed with her white tank/jeans/all-the-gold look!):

???????????????????????????

(Rad T-Shirt from Express in NY, jeans from Monsoon, gold necklaces and earrings are mostly vintage and/or gifts)

And here I am, over a decade ago, embarrassing myself whilst channelling her other Crazy in Love outfit at a fancy dress party:

??????????????????????

Don’t you just love it when you are accidentally fashionable?

When I first saw all the glorious pics from Moschino’s new collection with Jeremy Scott, I couldn’t help but feel a little smug. I’ve been taking inspiration from fast food for years! Here I am at my sister and brother-in-law’s joint birthday party, back in 2009, where the theme was “come as your favourite food”. (A theme I totally recommend, people got really creative and it was hilarious.) Anyway, for me there was only one option- I had to represent all my favourite junk foods!

So I went to McDonald’s and requested a bunch of empty french fry cartons. (They questioned me throroughly before complying, I think they thought I was going to stage some kind of anti-establishment, down with McDonald’s art installation in Trafalgar Square or something. When I explained what it was for, they clearly thought that no one would make up something so ridiculous so it must be true.) I then stapled them together in a triangular/corset formation, along with some elastic for the back.

The next Two for Tuesday I asked for some empty Domino’s pizza boxes along with my dinner. Being one of their most loyal customers (I actually won a free garlic pizza bread for this once. Only thing I’ve ever won. I really shouldn’t be so proud of that…), they easily agreed and I strung them onto some twine that  I made into a skirt. I drank a few too many Diet Cokes, washed the cans and tied them on too (I’m all about embellishment).Throw in some Walker’s crisp packets to preserve my modesty and boom – a skirt.

Then it was accessory time. I simply slid a chip packet onto a headband (and you can’t tell in the pictures, but I also stuck some diamantes from Claire’s Accessories onto the top) and voila – tiara. I stuck the “Warning: Hot Pizza” flaps from my pizza boxes onto my shoes with sellotape and I bought some popping corn, popped it and strung it to make some necklaces and a bracelet (it’s the butter and salt etc. that makes it greasy, without that it was fine.) I also happened to have burger earrings and a ring (don’t ask) so I was ready! I even did a red and yellow striped mani, but as this was in the pre-blog/pre-iphone years for me, I don’t have any decent pics 😦 (Imagine! The horror!)

burgerearrings

My burger earrings. The chip earrings were a more recent gift from my bf, otherwise I would definitely have included them too!

Untitlednails

The best pictures I could gather of my McManicure…

Image

ImageI would totally wear these!

ImageNaturally, I want the whole collection….

???????????????????????????????

So, I’m not saying that Jeremy Scott and Moschino were necessarily inspired by my fancy dress costume from 5 years ago…..but can you prove that they weren’t?!?!

:-p

I’m getting my hair cut tomorrow. I already kind of have a bob but, while I long to look 90s, messy and grungy, I instead resemble a cross between Jackie O and my mother. Both beautiful women, but not what I’m going for right now. So here is my hair moodboard (and boy do I feel pretentious writing “moodboard”) of some of my favourite bobs. Some that could potentially be achievable with my hair and several that aren’t!

Wish me luck!

When I first read about Charlotte Olympia’s new collection inspired by Archie comics on Talk To My Shoes I actually squealed out loud at work and had to feign a sprained foot. My excitement is out of all proportion seeing as I won’t be able to afford any of it but the marriage of two of my all-time favourite things was just too exciting for me! Archie comics are a glorious, wholesome, cool, joyous reminder of my youth (an American friend of a friend of my Nannie used to import them for me, and I used to get them as treats when I was good. Ok, “good” may be an overstatement. When I wasn’t that bad.) And Charlotte Olympia, well, has she ever done anything that didn’t make me feel at least four of the seven deadly sins? (The fun ones, obvs ;-p). Seriously, I want ALL THE THINGS! So, I spent quite some time looking through the pictures of the collection and sighing wistfully until I realised that I could totally DIY something similar, with ease. Ok, not exactly the same, but I could definitely channel the same vibe and get my happy Archie fashion fix!

Image

So, inspired by these shoes, I set about creating little hearty brooches that I could put on all my shoes. I was going to do it all ruched and pretty, but lost patience as I wanted to wear them NOW. (I miiight be more Veronica than Betty.)

First, I cut up some old Archie comics and also printed out various pictures I liked. Then I laminated them at work. (Naughty Styletterie). Then I simply used various bits of old fabric, some brooch backs, some pearls  and some plain multi-purpose glue and fashioned the above hearty shoe brooches. Then I decided it would be really fun to make some Betty and Veronica cameos, so I went online and found them some frames (pink and vintage-y for Betty and diamonds for Veronica, naturally). I loved those so decided that Jughead definitely needed to get involved since as far as I am concerned his laid back attitude, never-ending appetite for junk food and penchant for crowns make him the coolest member of the gang. (Ok fine, I fancy Jughead, so sue me! Juggie, if you’re reading this- call me.) Poor lovelorn Ethel was his counterpart, and I might make them into earrings.

Image

Image

I then got a little trigger-happy and started attaching them to everything I could find. I might try and papier mache a bangle at some point too. Basically, if you see a lunatic dressed head to toe in little pictures of comic strip characters skipping through the streets of London, saying “Omigod!” and “Sheesh kebob!” every 2 minutes, don’t be alarmed….

Thank you!

Love,

The Styletterie
