Trying on stuff in Zara (I know, I know, I shouldn’t go abroad to go to shops we have at home but still..). I didn’t buy the dress on the left, but I did buy the one on the right 🙂

My niece requested that I learn to make loom bands. I didn’t realise you actually needed a loom (yes, I’m special like that), so I was only able to make the simplest version, which was this. It made me look tanned so I made myself one and wore it too! The bracelets are vintage (stolen from my parents, they have their names on them).

Some pictures from my August trip to visit my parents in Athens…

PackingCrisis

The obligatory packing crisis…

Summer 2014 143

My nephew’s cool new hat! (That his mother hates, which of course only makes him love it more… It’s funny how a word means such different things to different generations. To my parents, in their 60s and 70s, a dope is someone a bit stupid. To my brother and sister-in-law, in their 40s, it means drugs. To my 10 year old nephew it just means cool.)

Just chilling with my nephews on the beach…

Wear sunscreen!!

(I actually did wear sunscreen, so this should read “wear sunscreen and re-apply every hour, and try and get even coverage! Gah!”)

Summer 2014 758

Trying stuff on in BSB. I quite liked this jumpsuit but my mother was very unimpressed! Plus, I couldn’t bend my legs, so it stayed behind 😦 Also, loads of the changing rooms in Athens don’t have mirrors in them which drove me crazy! I do not enjoy having to do all my embarrassing what-does-it-look-like-from-different-angles? posing (squatting to see what I’d look like sitting down etc.) in a room full of shoppers!

And the shop assistants hover. Which I hate.

CoralSwimsuit

Swimsuit: River Island. I love this swimsuit, it’s a great colour and the ruching makes it uber-flattering but it had no support at all (why do shops do that?!) so I bought a cheap strapless bikini top bra from Asos and sewed it in. Not ideal but better than nothing! Shorts: Dorothy Perkins.

Pjs1

…that these are pyjamas?

My sister bought me these gorgeous PJ bottoms (Rosie Huntington-Whitely for Marks & Spencer) as I have them in pink and they are the comfiest things I have ever owned, but I thought these were way too pretty to wear to sleep! So I have tried to glam them up, in the hope that I can wear them out without anyone realising that they’re PJs. What do you think? Can I get away with it?

It would feel like the best life hack ever if I could go out in pyjamas without anyone knowing! 😀

Have a great week!

shorts

I’m in Athens at the moment, visiting my parents, and these are all the shorts I brought…that are currently lounging uselessly in a cupboard, unable to be used as I have about 25 mosquito bites on my legs alone, and 2 weird patches of sunburn where my sunscreen obviously didn’t reach. In short (pun intended), my legs are not looking their best right now!

Now, where did I put my maxi-dresses…?

(Shorts L-R: H&M, Dorothy Perkins, Warehouse, River Island. Sunnies L-R: River Island, Amy Cavill for Anthropologie, River Island, Peacocks)

Hope everyone’s having a great summer!

Glamour

Really? Really? REALLY?? What is this? I was flicking through Glamour the other night when I came across this and just had to share.

How stupid do they think we actually are? Ignoring the look on the left, which is actually ok, they want me to spend £810 so I can look like a homeless extra in a zombie movie? Or £709 so I can channel an Amish grandmother from the 70s? Are they serious?

Quite apart from the hilarious notion that anyone would spend £43 on decaying-flesh coloured socks, does anyone know anyone who would leave the house looking like this? Specifically the middle look. My parents often bemoan the whole “distressed” trend – for them the idea that someone would shell out for jeans that are already ruined is ridiculous – and for once I see their point. This is just a frumpy jumper (a frumper?) that has been dragged through the proverbial hedge backwards, teamed with old trackie bottoms and physics teacher shoes.* And it’s also apparently the “perfect weekend look”.

For £810.

I despair.

The Styletterie

*Don’t even get me started on the whole “ugly shoe” trend thing – Sometimes I feel like the fashion industry is just testing out how dumb we really are, for a laugh. (And a profit, obviously.)

(Ps. I’m sure Natalie Hartley is a nice lady, who usually looks better than this!)

floraltrousers231

I have been desperate for some patterned trousers for ages now (we’re talking several years), but alas, while I love my big hips, patterns don’t really tend to! I found these in Primark last week and decided to give them a go since they were cheap. I love the pattern, but I see-sawed all day on whether or not I liked them. I’m a big believer that a huge part of having good style is knowing when a particular trend just doesn’t suit you, and I’m worried that these may have fallen into that category for me.

It didn’t help that as the day progressed, they got looser and looser in weird places (like the thighs and knees). I guess that’s what you get for buying cheapie trousers!:

Start of day…reasonably flattering…

End of day….not ideal.

Perhaps a costume change mid-way through work is the answer?

It seems to work for Beyoncé….

Happy Hump Day everyone!

Cheap,Floral

It was my sister’s birthday last weekend and she had 2 parties (because if you can’t channel the Queen on your birthday, when can you?) Her first party was at home and I wore:

– My Dolly Parton slogan tee that I bought when I saw her live last month, tied up at the back with a hairtie to make it the right length.

– My Mum’s cobalt blue skirt from the 70s. (Worn previously in a winter OOTD.)

– Accessorize pink and black mini-wedges

– Chandelier earrings that were a gift several years ago

– Accessorize necklace, I got it last week in the sale 🙂

– My Viva Forever bracelet, bought when I went to see the musical of the same name.

On Sunday night we went to a pub quiz, and I wore my new Asos off-the-shoulder dress, which is now my favourite thing. It’s super comfy, airy and perfect for summer. (Argh – when searching for the link to the dress, I came across about 30 other off-the-shoulder numbers that I now want! This is not good…)

orangefloral2

I wore it with my white Office plimsolls and white Asos backpack. I also wore my gorgeous new Oliver Bonas amethyst necklace that my sister gave me (on her birthday- I don’t think she understands birthdays very well! Not that I’m complaining….!)

 Isn’t it lovely?!!

I’m incapable of not twirling when I put on a floaty dress!

(Secretly, I’m 8).

My bf thought it actually looked cooler with the leather straps of my backpack showing.

This is to demonstrate that my tan lines from where I burnt recently are so strong that it actually looks as if I have my backpack on all the time!

Argh.

Have a great weekend everybody!

chartreuse

Why does this always happen to me? I go out in mid-July (one of the hottest days of the year actually) to get a birthday present for my sister, and come home having spent £120 on a snot-coloured winter coat for myself.

Which I love!

😀

It’s from M&S and comes in loads of other gorgeous colours too! I especially love the lilac and pink. I can’t explain why I was drawn to the most controversial colour (it has already received many ‘bleurgh’ faces from the people I’ve shown it to), I just had to have it!

Let’s hope I feel the same way by the time winter rolls around! *

Love,

The Styletterie

* Who am I kidding? I live in London, winter will have started by the time I finish this post!

Peplum B2

Top: Marks & Spencer

Necklace: Primark

Shoes: Office

I wore this peplum top to work last week, and then out for drinks after. I always pair it with a biggish necklace, as it’s very high-necked for me and the necklace helps break it up.

(Please excuse me with the black and white photos etc, I have only just got a new phone with these functions and I am still in the “ooh everything looks so pretty in black and white or with one of those filters that makes everything a cool colour” phase!)

(Also, yes, I took a torso selfie whilst on the phone at work. I am that person.)

peplum jacket

This was another way I wore the top a while ago, with my Peacocks pink sparkly necklace, my Warehouse leather jacket and detachable Asos fur collar. Bit more girly/flashy.

Have a great week! 🙂

Way back in February I posted about my ASOS wishlist. One of the items on it was this leather dress, which I loved but couldn’t justify at £150, as I didn’t know where I would wear it.

I still have no idea where I would wear it, but now it’s on sale for £60 and they had my size so I went ahead and bought it anyway!

Incidentally, I had a dream last night in which all the shops in the world collectively released a statement saying that they were discontinuing my size! All other sizes would still be made, they would just skip mine. I had a massive dream tantrum and woke up quite genuinely vexed. 😦 I’m sure this dream symbolically reveals something deep and meaningful about my subconscious personality.

Possibly that I’m shallow 😉

My boyfriend thinks it’s “a bit much” and possibly only suitable for a goth/fetish themed event (neither of which ever really crop up in my daily life) and my sister was on the fence.

Any thoughts? I think I like it. It fits quite nicely and the length, which was a big concern, is actually surprisingly flattering. (Loving these M&S sandals!). I wouldn’t wear it in the summer obviously but maybe for a formal event in autumn or winter? (Still not sure where though, don’t think it would work for a wedding or anything.)

Is it too gothy? Too fetishy? Too spherical boob-y? I might try and pair it with a little cardi to tone it down a bit (as suggested by the ingenious Maison Bentley), would this make the difference?

Basically, should it stay or should it go? Help, please!

Thank you!

Happy Friday!

The Styletterie
